'SAFE ZONE' Alert: Vivian
Genome
Our place in the world is connected to the physical environment but also depends upon the
place we choose as our safe place - where we feel comfortable and at home. It is possible to use
that chosen place as a starting point and lens through which to see identity. For some, it may be
the land their ancestors lived on, for others a nation-state or social class or gender, and still for
others their ‘safe’ place me be internal, beyond, or prior to the idea of a group or community.
These photos explore that internal place in an experimental way, based on hair strands,
eyelashes, eyebrows, fingernails, and other places DNA is collected. Added to that is the
physical world of earth and plant roots. Together they form a lens with which to see identity -
and create a picture of an internal ‘safe’ place.
